CLAIMS

What is claimed is:

1. A method of using a suspended personal radiation protection system, comprising the steps of:

providing an ensemble that substantially protects a portion of an operator's body from radiation, where the ensemble is suspended from a suspension component that provides a multi-axis range of motion;

providing a head shield to the suspension component; and

protecting at least a portion of the operator's head from radiation.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of affixing the suspension component to a vertical support by a wall mounting plate.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the suspension component comprises an overhead structure affixed to a vertical support.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of affixing the suspension component to a vertical support by a wall mounting plate removably connected to the overhead structure by an adaptor.

5. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of affixing the suspension component on a horizontal surface by a wall mounting plate removably connected to the overhead structure by an adaptor and supported by a floor pedestal.

6. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of mounting the suspension component on a horizontal surface by a wall mounting plate removably connected to the overhead structure by an adaptor and supported by a floor pedestal, the floor pedestal being mobile and control of movement of the floor pedestal being provided by a combination of operator generated commands and autonomous commands generated by a mobile floor pedestal sensor and control module.

7. A radiation protection system, comprising:

an overhead structure affixed to a vertical support;

a wall mounting plate removably connected to the overhead structure;

a suspension component that may be flexibly mounted to the vertical support;

a radiation protection garment supported by the suspension component.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component comprises a horizontal structure that mechanically connects to a vertical mounting plate.

9. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component comprises a horizontal structure that mechanically connects to a vertical mounting plate, the vertical mounting plate having fasteners that mechanically attach the suspension component to the vertical support.

10. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component comprises a horizontal structure that mechanically connects to a vertical mounting plate, the vertical mounting plate having fasteners that mechanically attach the system to a vertical support mounted on a pedestal based vertical member.

11. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component is mobile.

12. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component and supported system is mobile; and

wherein movement of the system is controlled by operator accessible input controls.

13. The system of claim 7, wherein networked sensors and displays integrated with the radiation protection garment and the suspension component monitor radiation exposure and task related information and provide information to an operator and external receivers.

14. The system of claim 7, wherein the suspension component incorporates a swivel mechanically connecting a cable supporting the radiation protection garment with an overhead structure.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a radiation protection ensemble component comprising:

a garment;

a head shield; and

a face shield removably attached to and independently operable from the head shield; and

a suspension component supporting the radiation protection ensemble;

at least one display mounted to the face shield.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the face shield is coated to resist damage.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein a plurality of measurements and task related information is presented to an operator by the at least one display.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the suspension component incorporates a power and mobility component enabling self-propelled movement of garment.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the ensemble is formed from radiation absorbent material providing the equivalent of at least 1mm of lead at 150 KVp.

20. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:

a seat that is suspended from the suspension component and configured for an operator to sit on during an operating procedure.
