Abstract
(EN) The present invention describes a method for monitoring and analysing electroencephalography (EEG) signals to predict the probability of the development of post-operative delirium (POD) in patients undergoing surgery. The method involves receiving a patient’s EEG signals, calculating the spectral power in predefined time windows using canonical frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha and beta) and comparing the calculated spectral powers with the centroids of at least two, preferably four, predefined brain state clusters. These clusters include low broadband power (LBP), high broadband power (HBP), alpha prevalent (AP) and delta prevalent (DP). On the basis of the comparison, the brain state is classified and the fractional occupancy of the LBP state, i.e. the proportion of time that the patient spends in this state, is calculated. The method then predicts the probability of developing POD according to the time spent in the LBP state. The invention also includes a system, a computer program product and a computer-readable storage means for implementing the method.
