La presente invención se refiere a un método para conferir tolerancia a un análogo de aminoácido del triptofano, a una planta y/o alterar el contenido de triptofano de una planta mediante la introducción y expresión de un segmento de ADN aislado que codifica para una antranilato-sintasa en las células de la planta. Las plantas transgénicas transformadas con un segmento de ADN aislado que codifica para una antranilato-sintasa, asícomo las semillas y la progenie derivadas de estas plantas, son también proporcionadas. La presente invención también proporciona una secuencia de ADNc de una subunidad alfa y una subunidad beta de una antranilato-sintasa de maíz.
