Claims

1. A transdermal drug delivery device comprising:

a first chamber wall (1) that defines a needle chamber (3) for aligning a needle (5) to create a pore in the skin (8) of a patient; and

a second chamber wall (2) that defines a drug chamber (4) for aligning a drug mass (7) to be inserted into the pore alongside the needle (5);

characterized in that the device has sufficient flexibility to allow a distance between first chamber wall (1) and the second chamber wall (2) to increase as the drug mass (7) is inserted alongside the needle (5).

2. A transdermal drug delivery device according to claim 1, wherein the second chamber wall (2) is angled to deflect the drug mass (7) towards the needle (5) as the drug mass (7) is inserted into the pore.

3. A transdermal drug delivery device according to any preceding claim, wherein the flexibility of the device is due to flexure of a connection between the first and second chamber walls (1,2).

4. A transdermal drug delivery device according to any preceding claim, wherein the flexibility of the device is due to flexibility of at least one of the first and second chamber walls (1,2).

5. A transdermal delivery device according to claim 4, wherein the first chamber wall (1) and the second chamber wall (2) are made from differently flexible materials.

6. A transdermal delivery device according to claim 4 or claim 5, wherein the first chamber wall (1) and the second chamber wall (2) are formed with differently flexible structures.

7. A transdermal drug delivery device according to claim 5 or claim 6, wherein the first chamber wall (1) is more flexible than the second chamber wall (2), thereby allowing the needle (5) to move laterally as the drug mass (7) is inserted alongside it.

8. A transdermal delivery device according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the needle chamber (3) and the drug chamber (4) are separated by a thin wall.

9. A transdermal delivery device according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the needle chamber (3) and the drug chamber (4) are opposing parts of a single chamber.

10. A transdermal delivery device according to any preceding claim, further comprising a needle (5) supported in the needle chamber (3) and a drug mass (7) supported in the drug chamber (4).

11. A transdermal delivery device according to claim 10, wherein the drug mass (7) tapers towards a leading tip.

12. A transdermal delivery device according to claim 10, wherein the drug mass (7) also tapers towards a trailing end.

13. A transdermal delivery device according to any of claims 10 to 12, wherein the needle (5) comprises a substantially flat face abutting the drug mass (7).

14. A transdermal delivery device according to any of claims 10 to 13, further comprising an insertion rod (6) for pushing the drug mass (7) into the pore.

15. A transdermal delivery device according to claim 14, wherein the insertion rod (6) is joined to or integral with the needle (5).

16. A method of transdermal drug delivery comprising:

aligning a needle (5) in a needle chamber (3) of a drug delivery device; aligning a drug mass (7) in a drug chamber (4) of the drug delivery device;

placing the device against the skin (8) of a patient;

inserting the needle (5) into the skin (8) to create a pore;

simultaneously or subsequently inserting the drug mass (7) into the pore alongside the needle (5); and

removing the needle (5) from the skin (8) while leaving the drug mass (7) in place;

characterized in that, insertion of the drug mass (7) alongside the needle (5) causes a distance between a first chamber wall (1) of the needle chamber (3) and a second chamber wall (2) of the drug chamber (4) to increase.

17. A method of transdermal drug delivery according to claim 16, wherein, during insertion of the drug mass (7) alongside the needle (5), the first wall (1) flexes to allow the needle (5) to move laterally.

18. A transdermal drug delivery device substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
