WHAT IS CLAIMED IS

1. A cord fastener which comprises:
a housing having a cavity extending
therethrough;
a locking element disposed in said cavity;
said locking element comprising a stationary segment fixedly engaged with said housing and a
movable segment connected to said stationary
segment by a spring means;
a cord passage defined by opposing surfaces of said cavity and said movable segment; and
said spring means urging said movable segment so that said opposing surfaces restrict said
passage.

2. The fastener recited in claim 1 further comprising:
handle means for moving said movable segment so that said passage is enlarged.

3. The fastener recited in claim 2 wherein said
housing is an integrally molded part and said
locking element is a separate integrally molded
part.

4. The fastener recited in claim 1 wherein said
stationary segment is fixedly engaged with said
housing by snap-engagement means cooperatively
disposed on surfaces of said stationary segment and said cavity.

5. The fastener recited in claim 4 wherein said snap- engagement means comprises congruently shaped
depressions and protrusions.

6. The fastener recited in claim 4 wherein the snap- engagement means comprises two or more arms
extending outwardly from said stationary segment into said cavity and a protrusion having a cammed surface extending from each arm into a
corresponding depression in said cavity.

7. The fastener recited in claim 5 wherein the
depressions are cylindrical holes and the
protrusions are cylindrical posts.

8. The fastener recited in claim 4 wherein said snap- engagement means comprises a pair of dog-ears
extending from said stationary segment into said cavity and protrusions extending from said dog-ears for engaging corresponding depressions in said
housing.

9. The fastener recited in claim 1 wherein the spring means is a multiple cantilever beam spring.

10. The fastener recited in claim 1 wherein said means for moving said movable segment comprises a slot in said housing and a handle means extending from the movable segment through said slot.

11. A cord fastener which comprises:
a housing having a cavity extending
therethrough;
a locking element disposed in said cavity;
said locking element comprises a stationary segment fixedly engaged with said housing and a
movable segment connected to said stationary
segment by a spring means;

a pair of cord passages defined by opposing surfaces of said cavity and said movable segment;
and
said spring means urging said movable segment so that said opposing surfaces restrict said
passages.

12. The fastener recited in claim 11 wherein the cord passages converge about a central axis passing
through said cavity and at least a portion of said opposing surfaces are serrated.

13. The fastener recited in claim 12 further
comprising:
handle means for moving said moveable segment so that said passages is enlarged.

14. The fastener recited in claim 13, wherein said
housing is an integrally molded part and said
locking element is a separate integrally molded
part.

15. The fastener recited in claim 12 wherein said
stationary segment is fixedly engaged with said
housing by snap-engagement means cooperatively
disposed on surfaces of said stationary segment and said cavity.

16. The fastener recited in claim 15 wherein said
snap-engagement means comprises congruently shaped depressions and protrusions.

17. The fastener recited in claim 15 wherein the snap- engagement means comprises two or more arms extending outwardly from said stationary segment into said cavity and a protrusion having a cammed surface extending from each arm into a
corresponding depression in said cavity.

18. The fastener recited in claim 16 wherein the
depressions are cylindrical holes and the
protrusions are cylindrical posts.

19. The fastener recited in claim 15 wherein said
snap-engagement means comprises a pair of dog-ears extending from said stationary segment into said cavity and protrusions extending from said dog-ears for engaging corresponding depressions in said
housing.

20. The fastener recited in claim 12 wherein said means for moving said movable segment comprises a slot in said housing and a handle means extending from, the movable segment through said slot.

21. A cord fastener which comprises:
a housing having a cavity extending
therethrough;
a locking element disposed in said cavity;
said locking element comprising a stationary segment fixedly engaged with said housing and a
movable segment connected to said stationary
segment by a spring means;
a cord passage passing transversly through
said housing and defind by opposing surfaces of
said housing and movable segment; and
said spring means urging said movable segment so that said opposing surfaces restrict said passage .

22. The fastener recited in claim 21 further comprising V-shaped knife edges disposed on said opposing
surfaces.

23. The fastener recited in claim 22 wherein the V- shaped knife edges define an included angle of less than about 120°.

24. The fastener recited in claim 22 wherein the
included angle is about 120°.

25. The fastener recited in claim 21 wherein said
housing is an integrally molded part and said
locking element is a separate integrally molded
part.

26. The fastener recited in claim 21 wherein said
stationary segment is fixedly engaged with said
housing by snap-engagement means cooperatively
disposed on surfaces of said stationary segment and said cavity.

27. The fastener recited in claim 26 wherein said
snap-engagement means comprises congruently shaped depressions and protrusions.

28. The fastener recited in claim 26 wherein the snap- engagement means comprises two or more arms
extending outwardly from said stationary segment into said cavity and a protrusion having a cammed surface extending from each arm into a
corresponding depression in said cavity.

29. The fastener recited in claim 26 wherein said
snap-engagement means comprises a pair of dog-ears extending from said stationary segment into said cavity.

30. The fastener recited in claim 21 wherein the spring means is a multiple cantilever beam spring.
