Methods and machining apparatus for indexing and forming spool and pinion shafts (12 and 20) for use in a rotary control valve (10) of a power steering system are disclosed. In particular, the methods include forming a contoured spool shaft extension (58) on an end of a spool shaft (12) and a complementary rosette on an end of a pinion shaft (20), and forming spool and pinion shaft holders (66 and 80) having complementary rosettes and contoured ends, respectively, to permit accurate mounting of the spool and pinion shafts (12 and 20) during subsequent machine operations. The machining apparatus includes a workpiece holder (156) which rotates the spool or pinion shaft (12 or 20) at a predetermined speed and a cutting assembly (106) which moves a cutting tool (86) into and out of contact with the workpiece (132) at three times the speed of rotation of the workpiece (132).

L'invention concerne des procédés et un appareil d'usinage pour mettre au point et former des axes de satellites et de tiroirs (12 et 20) d'une vanne de commande rotative (10) d'un système de direction assistée. En particulier, ces procédés consistent à former une extension (58) d'axe de tiroir profilée, sur une extrémité d'un axe de tiroir (12) ainsi qu'une rondelle d'écartement complémentaire sur une extrémité d'un axe de satellites (20), puis à former des supports (66 et 80) d'axes de tiroirs et de satellites présentant des extrémités profilées et des rondelles d'écartement complémentaires, respectivement, afin de permettre la fixation précise de ces axes (12 ou 20) pendant les opérations d'usinage ultérieures. L'appareil d'usinage comprend un support (156) de pièce à usiner qui assure la rotation de l'axe de tiroir ou de satellites (12 ou 20) à une vitesse prédéterminée. Cet appareil comporte également un ensemble de coupe (106) qui déplace un outil de coupe (86) pour le faire passer en contact avec la pièce à usiner (132) ou le séparer de cette dernière, à une vitesse égale à trois fois la vitesse de rotation de la pièce à usiner (132).
