THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. A fertile, transgenic maize plant, the genome of which has been augmented by the introduction of a DNA composition comprising a drought resistance trait comprising a mannitol-1 -phosphate dehydrogenase gene, a trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene, a myoinositol 0-methyltransferase gene or a Late Embryogenic Protein (LEA) gene; wherein the transgenic plant exhibits one or more phenotypic characteristics that render it identifiable over the corresponding imtransformed maize plant which docs not comprise said gene, and wherein said gene is transmittable through normal sexual reproduction of the transgenic maize plant to subsequent generation plants.
2. The transgenic maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the DNA composition includes a recombinant plasmid or plasmids.
3. The transgenic maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the DNA composition further includes a transpo sable element.
4 The transgenic maize plant of claim 3, wherein the transposable element comprises an Ac Ds or Mu element.
5 The transgenic maize plant of claim 1, wherein the gene is positioned on a vector capable of autonomous replication in maize cells.
6          The transgenic maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the DNA composition includes a gene positioned in a wheat dwarf virus (WDV) shuttle vector.
7          The transgenic maize plant of claim 1, wherein the gene is positioned under the control of a promoter region comprising multiple copies of the 16 bp ocs enhancer element.
8.         The fertile, transgenic maize plant of claim 1, wherein the LEA gene is a Hval gene.
9.         Cells obtained from the plant of claim 1.
10.       Progeny of the plant of claim l.
11.       Seeds obtained from the plant of claim 1.
12.       Seeds obtained from the plant of claim 10.
13.      A method for preparing a fertile transgenic maize plant, the genome of which has been nted through the introduction of a genetic component, comprising the steps of;
(a) preparing a DNA composition in vitro, which composition includes the genetic component one desires to introduce into the genome of a maize plant, wherein said genetic component is defined as including a drought resistance trait comprising a mannitol-1 -phosphate dehydrogenase gene, a trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene, a myoinositol O-methyltransferase gene or a Late Embryogenic Protein (LEA) gene;
(b) contacting recipient maize cells with said DNA composition under conditions allowing the uptake of the genetic component by recipient cells;
(c) regenerating maize plants from recipient cells which have received the genetic component; and
(d) identifying a fertile, transgenic maize plant whose genome has been augmented relative to that of the corresponding nontransgeme recipient cells through the stable introduction of said genetic component.
4.       The method of claim 13, wherein the conditions of uptake of the DNA composition microprojectile bombardment.
15. The method of claim 13, wherein the conditions of uptake of the DNA composition lude electroporation.
16. The method of claim 13, wherein the conditions of uptake of the DNA composition lude agitation of cells in a DNA solution.
17, The method of claim 13, further comprising collecting transgenic seeds from the fertile sgenic plant so produced.
18.      The method of claim 17, further comprising planting the collected transgenic seeds and wing progeny transgenic plants so produced.
19.      The method of claim 13, wherein said fertile progeny plants, or progeny of subsequent erations derived from said fertile progeny plants, are employed in a breeding or production gram.
