What is claimed is:
1. A method comprising:
identifying activities that comprise a process;
identifying at least one measurable driver for each of said activities;
costing said drivers;
representing the relationships between said drivers to reflect interdependence between activities; and
modeling said process as a function of said relationships.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of modeling includes the steps of:
representing each activity as a function of said activity's driver(s); and
using at least one of the activity representations in the model of said process.

3. The method of claim 1 additionally comprising the step of optimizing said model.

4. The method of claim 3 additionally comprising the step of revising said model using the results from said optimizing step.
5. The method of claim 3 additionally comprising the steps of:
selecting at least one objective; and
minimizing, for said selected objective, a function that represents said process in terms of variables that are drivers for more than one activity within said process.
6. The method of claim 5 additionally comprising the step of reconstructing the physical model based on the results of said minimizing step.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of identifying at least one measurable driver includes identifying economic and non-economic drivers.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of costing said drivers includes identifying at least one of fixed and variable components.
9. The method of claim 8 additionally comprising the steps of:
identifying drivers for said fixed and said variable components; and
costing said drivers for said fixed and said variable components.
10. A method of claim 1 additionally comprising the step of:
identifying drivers used in more than one activity; and
wherein said representing step if performed based on said identified drivers.

11. An apparatus for constructing a model of a supply and distribution chain, comprising: a processor for manipulating data which includes receiving information which:
identifies activities that comprise a process;
identifies at least one measurable driver for each of said activities;
costs said drivers; and
identifies drivers relevant to more than one activity to reflect interdependence between activities;
said processor organizing said identified drivers into a model of said process.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said processor performs the additional step of optimizing said model for an objective function.
13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said processor performs the additional step of revising said model using the results from said optimizing step.
14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said processor, in the performance of said optimizing step, performs the steps of:
selecting at least one objective; and
minimizing, for said selected objective, a function that represents said process in terms of variables that are drivers for more than one activity within said process.
15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said step of said processor receiving information which identifies measurable drivers includes information which identifies economic and non-economic drivers.
16. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said step of said processor receiving information which costs the drivers includes information which identifies at least one of fixed and variable components.
17. A model of a supply and distribution chain produced by the apparatus of claim 11.
