1. A communication system (10) for use with a single pair of wires (14, 16), said single pair of wires (14, 16) having an externally connected segment (14) and an
in-house segment (16), said in-house segment (16) having a plurality of subsets (20) interconnected therewith; said system (10) characterized by the combination of:

means (Figure 3) for selectively providing
connection between said externally connected segment (14) and said in-house segment (16); and

means (Figure 2), interconnected between each said subset (20) and said in-house segment (16), for
establishing direct communication between said subsets (20).

2. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each said means (Figure 2) for establishing direct ,
communication between said subsets (20) is further
characterized by including first means (33), when two of said subsets (20) are connected to said in-house segment (16), for preventing another one of said subsets (20) from simultaneously accessing said in-house segment (16).

3. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said first means (33) is further characterized by including second means (32), when one said subset (20) is connected to said externally connected segment (14), for preventing another one of said subsets (20) from simultaneously accessing said externally connected segment (14).

4. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 3, further
characterized in that it includes means (108) for
overriding said second means (32).

5. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said means (Figure 2) for establishig direct communication between said subsets (20) is further characterized in that it includes means (54) for assigning an identifier to each said subset (20).

6. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said means (Figure 2) for establishing direct communication between said subsets (20) is further characterized by including:

a plurality of station adapter modules (18), each said station adapter modules (18) being connected between one of said subsets (20) and said in-house segment (16); and

means (54), associated \>*ith each said station adapter module (18), for identifying said subset (20) associated therewith.

7. A system (10) as' claimed in Claim 6-, wherein each said station adapter module (18) is further characterized in that it includes:

means (60) for enabling a call announcer (62) in response to a signal from said subset identifying means (54); and

means (56) for introducing a time-delay before said call announcer (62) is enabled, said delay being at least as long as the time required for all identifiers to be received by said subset identifying means (54).

A system (10) as claimed in Claim 7, wherein said subset identifying means (54) is further characterized by including a dial pulse counter (52) and an externally settable counter output selector (54) whereby a signal is conveyed across said selector (54) only when the selected number of dial pulses are counted by said dial pulse counter (52).

9. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 6, wherein each said station adapter module (18) is further characterized by including:

means (60) for enabling a call announcer (62) in response to a signal from said subset identifying means (54); and

means (58) for introducing a time-delay before said call announcer (62) is enabled, said time-delay being longer than the time-delay between consecutive pulses of a rotary dial subset, said time-delay being reset by each said pulse.

10. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 1, characterized by further including means (Figure 3) for selectively connecting said subsets (20) to said externally connected segment (14).

A system (10) as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said means (Figure 3) for selectively providing connecting between said externally connected segment (14) and said in-house segment (16) is a line interface module (12) characterized by including means for providing PABX type features to each said subset (20) connected to said
in-house segment (16).

12. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 11, characterized by further including a microprocessor (108), said
microprocessor (108) being responsive to inputs from said in-house segment (16) for selecting the PABX feature designated thereby.

13. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 11, wherein said line interface adapter (120) is characterized by including:

means (104) for repertory dialing a number from a memory portion associated therewith and for redialing the last previous number dialed by any of said subsets (20); and means (92) for accessing said externally connected segment (14) and simultaneously disconnecting said in-house segment (16) therefrom.

14. A system (10) as claimed in Claim 11, characterized by further including means (94), in the event of a power loss, for establishing connection between said in-house segment (16) and said externally connected segment (14).
