Disclosed is an apparatus for monitoring a product flow for unwanted occlusions. In said apparatus, a material-specific identification signal is derived in a monitored section of the product flow by means of a sensory mechanism comprising several sensors which are arranged in a staggered fashion in the direction of travel of the product flow so as to form a series of sensors and an evaluation circuit that is associated with said sensory mechanism, the material-specific identification signal being derived by simultaneously adding the output signals of the individual sensors in a correlated manner in an addition circuit, said output signals originating from individual products with respect to metal particles in the monitored product flow, and the output signal of the addition circuit is used as an identification signal for a metal particle that is to be detected. At least one sensor of a series of sensors is provided for compensating interfering magnetic fields, the output signals of said at least one sensor being added in phase opposition to the output signals of other sensors to produce a difference. The obtained differential signals are evaluated in a correlated manner in an addition circuit provided for generating the identification signal.
