The transmission of data that is critical in terms of safety from a first communication device having low computing capacity and low storage capacity to a second communication device is problematic insofar as a substantial amount of computing power and storage space is required to create the necessary protocols used for mutual authentication purposes and specifying a common key. One aim of the invention therefore is to create a method which is used for mutually authenticating a first communication device and a second communication device and specifying a common key between the first communication device and the second communication device and in which the necessary storage capacity is further reduced and the required storage space is reduced compared to previously known methods. The inventive method achieves said aim by the fact that an authentication and key specification protocol is disclosed which has significantly fewer requirements regarding the available computer structure.
