A self drilling expansion friction bolt which includes an elongate tubular member with a bore, a first end and an opposed second end, a sacrificial drill bit mounted to the first end, a connector assembly at the second end which is configured to be connected to a drilling machine and to a pressurised fluid source, a fluid passage between the connector assembly and the drill bit, and a valve mechanism which is operable to allow fluid from the source at a pressure below a first pressure to flow through the fluid passage to the drill bit thereby to flush the drill bit, and to allow fluid from the source at a pressure above the first pressure to flow into the bore thereby to expand the elongate tubular member in a radial direction.

A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 1 wherein the valve mechanism goes from an open position to a closed position when the pressure of the fluid exceeds the first pressure.

A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 1 wherein the fluid passage comprises the bore.

A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 3 wherein the valve mechanism is located at the second end between the bore and the drill bit.

A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 4 wherein the valve mechanism includes a valve seat which defines a fluid flow aperture, a valve member and a biasing component which acts on the valve member to bias the valve member away from the seat.

A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 1 wherein the connector assembly comprises a first connector which is configured to be connected to the

drilling machine and a second connector which is configured to be connected to the pressurised fluid source.

7. A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 5 wherein the valve member is movable by pressure of the fluid, inside the bore, into engagement with the valve seat when the fluid pressure exceeds said first pressure.

8. A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 7 wherein the valve member is movable out of engagement with the valve seat when the fluid pressure falls below said first pressure.

9. A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 1 which includes a flushing tube which extends from the valve mechanism to the drill bit and the flushing tube includes the fluid passage, and wherein the valve mechanism is located at the second end.

10. A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 9 wherein the flushing tube is located inside the bore.

1 1 . A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 9 wherein the elongate tubular member includes an outer surface and a longitudinally extending channel formation on the outer surface, and wherein the flushing tube is located at least partly inside the channel formation.

12. A self drilling expansion friction bolt according to claim 1 wherein the tubular member includes an elongate channel formation which extends radially inwardly.

13. A rock bolt which includes an elongate tubular member, a sacrificial drill bit at one end of the member, a flushing passage to direct fluid to the drill bit, and a valve which closes the passage thereby to allow the fluid to pressurize the tubular member internally and so expand the member radially.

4. A self drilling expansion bolt according to claim 1 which can withstand dynamic

loading and absorb a minimum of 27kilojoules of energy.
