WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A surgical stapling anvil, comprising:

an anvil body, comprising:

a tissue-facing surface;

a plurality of staple forming pockets defined in said tissue-facing surface; and a longitudinal slot, comprising:

a first portion comprising a first width, wherein said first portion is configured to receive a cutting edge of a firing member therethrough; and

a second portion comprising a second width greater than said first width, wherein said second portion is configured to receive an anvil-camming portion of the firing member therethrough; and

an anvil cap welded to said anvil body, wherein said anvil cap comprises:

a welded portion; and

a non-welded portion, wherein said non-welded portion comprises a non-welded width, and wherein said non-welded width is less than or equal to about 105% of said second width.

2. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 1 , wherein said non-welded portion comprises: a first non-welded portion configured to be received within said second portion of said longitudinal slot; and

a second non-welded portion comprising alignment surfaces configured to align said anvil cap to said anvil body for welding.

3. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 2, wherein said tissue-facing surface defines a first plane, and wherein said alignment surfaces define a second plane at least substantially parallel to said first plane.

4. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 1 , wherein said welded portion is flared with respect to said non-welded portion.

5. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 4, wherein said welded portion comprises welded, angular surfaces corresponding to angular surfaces of said anvil body.

6. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 1 , wherein said anvil cap comprises a Y-shaped cross-section.

7. A surgical stapling anvil, comprising:

an anvil body, comprising:

a longitudinal slot defining a slot axis, wherein said longitudinal slot comprises slot surfaces facing each other; and

a tissue-facing surface, comprising:

a first side and a second side defined by said longitudinal slot;

a plurality of staple-forming pockets arranged in a plurality of longitudinal rows of staple-forming pockets, wherein said plurality of longitudinal rows of staple-forming pockets comprises an inner-most row of staple-forming pockets closest to said longitudinal slot, wherein said inner-most row of staple-forming pockets defines a row axis a first distance from said slot axis and a first outer boundary axis a second distance from said slot axis which is greater than said first distance; and

an anvil cap welded to said anvil body, wherein said anvil cap comprises:

a welded portion; and

a non-welded portion comprising an outer-most non-welded region defining a second outer boundary axis positioned a third distance from said slot axis, wherein said third distance is less than said second distance.

8. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 7, wherein said third distance is greater than said first distance.

9. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 7, wherein said third distance is less than said first distance.

10. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 7, wherein said anvil cap further comprises alignment surfaces configured to align said anvil cap to said anvil body for welding.

1 1 . The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 10, wherein said tissue-facing surface defines a first plane, and wherein said alignment surfaces define a second plane at least substantially parallel to said first plane.

12. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 7, wherein said welded portion is flared with respect to said non-welded portion.

13. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 12, wherein said welded portion comprises welded, angular surfaces corresponding to angular surfaces of said anvil body.

14. The surgical stapling anvil of Claim 7, wherein said anvil cap comprises a Y-shaped cross-section.

15. An anvil for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said anvil comprises:

a first anvil member, comprising:

a tissue-facing surface defining a datum plane; and

a plurality of staple forming pockets defined in said tissue-facing surface; and a second anvil member welded to said first anvil member by at least one weld, wherein said first anvil member and said second anvil member comprise:

a first mating region defining a first plane which is at least substantially parallel to said datum plane;

a second mating region defining a second plane which is at least substantially perpendicular to said datum plane; and

a third mating region defining a third plane which is angled relative to said datum plane, wherein said first anvil member and said second anvil member are welded by said at least one weld at said third mating region.

16. The anvil of Claim 15, wherein said third mating region comprises a length, and wherein said at least one weld comprises a weld penetration depth which is at least about equal to said length.

17. The anvil of Claim 16, wherein said weld penetration depth is greater than said length.

18. The anvil of Claim 15, wherein said first mating region comprises alignment surfaces configured to align said first anvil member and said second anvil member for welding.

19. The anvil of Claim 15, wherein said second anvil member comprises a Y-shaped cross-section.

The anvil of Claim 15, wherein said at least one weld comprises a laser weld.
