CLAIMS

1. A turbocharger (100) comprising:

a turbine wheel (110), a compressor wheel (140), and a shaft (160) coupled to the turbine wheel (110) and the compressor wheel (140); and

a bearing housing (170) containing a thrust bearing (190) through which the shaft (160) extends, wherein the bearing housing (170) receives oil and drains the oil therefrom;

wherein the bearing housing (170) includes a reservoir (184) that maintains a retained portion of the oil received in the bearing housing (170) after the oil is drained from the bearing housing (170), the retained portion of the oil lubricating the thrust bearing (190).

2. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 1, wherein the thrust bearing (190) is arranged in the reservoir (184) in contact with the retained portion of the oil.

3. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 2, wherein the thrust bearing (190) has a lower portion (190d) that protrudes into the reservoir (184).

4 The turbocharger (100) according to claim 3, wherein the thrust bearing (190) has an outer periphery (190a) that includes a truncated portion (190d) with a central region (190e), wherein the central region (190e) defines the lower portion (190d).

5. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 4, wherein the central region (190e) has a constant radius that is concentric with an axis of rotation of the shaft (160).

6. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 4, wherein the reservoir (184) includes a lower wall (184b) having ends (184e) at an elevation above the lower portion (190d) of the thrust bearing (190).

7. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 4, wherein the truncated portion (190d) of the outer periphery (190a) of the thrust bearing (190) includes outer regions between which is the central region (190e), the outer regions being at least partly at an elevation above the lower portion (190d) of the thrust bearing (190).

8. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 1, wherein the reservoir (184) is coupled to an oil seal plate (180) that closes an opening of the bearing housing (170).

9. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 8, wherein the reservoir (184) is formed integrally with the oil seal plate (180).

10. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 8, wherein the reservoir (184) protrudes from the oil seal plate (18)) into the bearing housing (170).

11. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 1, wherein the reservoir (184) includes drain apertures (184f) configured to limit the retained portion of the oil to a predetermined level.

12. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 1, comprising:

a thrust washer (192) configured to rotate relative to and bear against the thrust bearing (190); and

an oil seal plate (180) configured to seal an opening of the bearing housing (170), wherein the thrust bearing (190) and the thrust washer (192) are positioned partially in the reservoir (184).

13. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 12, wherein the thrust bearing (190), the thrust washer (192), and the reservoir (184) are concentrically arranged.

14. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 12, wherein the oil seal plate (180) includes an outer wall (180a) configured to seal with the bearing housing (170) and an inner wall (184c) that at least partly defines the reservoir (184) and is spaced apart from the outer wall (180a) to form a slot (184g) therebetween, the thrust bearing (190) extending radially through the slot (184g).

15. The turbocharger (100) according to claim 14, wherein the oil seal plate (180) additionally includes a lower wall (184b) that at least partly forms the reservoir (184), wherein the inner wall (184c) extends upward above ends (184e) of the lower wall (184b).
