A first aspect of the invention provides an evaporative cooling pad with a honeycomb-like structure which provides multiple gas flow channels extending between a pair of opposite upright side faces; the pad having two spaced vertical sections (20, 21) enclosing an air-mixing chamber (22) between them so that air cooled by passage through one section is mixed in the chamber (22) before it enters the other section of the pad. A second aspect of the invention provides an apparatus for providing an enclosed space with a continuous supply of cooled air, including: a casing (1) having a first air inlet (2) through which fresh air is drawn into the casing; a first air outlet (5) for discharging cooled air from the casing into the enclosed space; a second air inlet (4) through which stale air enters the casing from the enclosed space; a second air outlet (3) through which stale air is expelled from the casing; a heat exchanger (7) having substantially counterflow primary and secondary gas flow circuits which have relatively good heat transfer properties existing between them and so connected that the primary circuit receives fresh air (6) to be cooled from the first air inlet (2) and cools the fresh air by transferring some of its heat to the stale air (8) flowing through the secondary circuit of the heat exchanger towards the stale air outlet (3); fan means (10, 26) for producing the required air flows through the casing; an evaporative, air-cooling pad (20) through which stale air from the second air inlet (4) flows and which is cooled by the evaporation of water from the pad (20) into the stale air; a reservoir (12) for holding water cooled by passing through the pad; a finned tube heat exchanger (16) positioned in an air flow path leading to the first air outlet (5); a water circuit which includes the reservoir (12), the pad (20) and the finned tube heat exchanger (16), and a pump (13) operating to circulate water from the reservoir (12) around the water circuit and back to the reservoir.

This information flows from the application of a newly found property of tetrahedral amorphous carbon. The invention relates to a digital information storage device useful in a range of applications. In a further aspect, the invention relates to a writable medium. The invention uses a layer of tetrahedral amorphous carbon and electrical means which are movable relative to each other. The electrical means are operable to reversibly change both the resistance and small signal capacitance of the tetrahedral amorphous carbon device in the region adjacent the electrical means. The principal advantage of using ta-C as a basis for digital information storage is its inherent inexpense, since it can be deposited very easily and cheaply over large areas. The material also has the potential for achieving higher storage densities than current non-volatile memories, and possibly higher than even DRAM. In terms of a design ta-C memories have the potential to be fabricated without the need for an access transistor. In this configuration memory arrays could be created simply by depositing a ta-C film in between perpendicular sets of conductive address lines, with a memory cell, or bit, at the intersection between crossing lines. Ta-C could also be used in place of the storage capacitor dielectric in a DRAM cell configuration, allowing long term memory storage by the ta-C memory effect, and providing against the possibility of soft errors through the use of an isolating access transistor. Alternatively, it is possible to write to the medium electrostatically with a simple point contact, or many point contacts in parallel.

A communications protocol is provided, including a physical interconnecting protocol and a cooperating signal protocol. The physical protocol includes a symmetrical interconnection system in which signals or power are transmitted via symmetrical cable core pairs such that cable reversal reverses each signal or power core pair, but leaves cores connected to the same signal sources and receivers. The signals carried over each core pair are electrically symmetrical signals such as signals conforming to RS422. The signal protocol is also preferably polarity insensitive.

In a cellular communications network including microcells and macrocells, a mobile device preferably communicates with an appropriate one of the microcells. When a handover from one microcell to another is imminent, a backup channel in the macrocell layer is allocated to the mobile device, for use if the handover is not successfully completed.

The present invention relates to a device for the gas-discharge visualisation of an image, wherein said device comprises an electrode which is connected to a high-voltage power supply and is used for generating an electric field. This device also includes a dielectric for isolating the object to be studied from the electrode as well as an optically connected television camera for observing the glow of the gas discharge. The dielectric and the electrode are made of an optically transparent material and the electrode is placed between said dielectric and said television camera. The dielectric may include a light guide in the shape of optical fibres which are arranged so as to be parallel, from their light-receiving end, to the plane on which the object to be studied is placed. The electrode is made in the shape of a metallic mesh. The television camera may include a photo-receptor which is optically connected to the light guide and has a fibre-optic input. This device can be used for instantaneously inputting and processing Kirlian images in a computer due to the improved sensitivity and resolution characteristics of the apparatus, thus improving image quality during a gas-discharge visualisation.
