A process for separating sour shifted synthesis gas feedstock into liquid carbon dioxide, a gaseous hydrogen-containing gas and separated sulphur-containing components includes the steps of a. scrubbing the sour shifted gas elevated pressure with an alcohol solvent in a first scrubber and separately recovering an alcohol stream containing the sulphur-containing components and a sweet shifted gas; b. thereafter cooling the sweet shifted gas to a temperature and elevated pressure at which the carbon dioxide contained therein condenses and a two-phase gas- liquid mixture is formed; c. separating the two-phase mixture of stage (b) into separate liquid carbon dioxide and gaseous hydrogen-containing fractions in a fractionation unit; d. extracting residual carbon dioxide from the separated gaseous hydrogen- containing fraction by scrubbing the gaseous hydrogen-containing fraction at elevated pressure with an alcohol solvent in a second scrubber and recovering an alcohol stream containing carbon dioxide; e. feeding the alcohol stream containing carbon dioxide produced in step (d) to the first scrubber and f. warming and expanding the scrubbed gaseous hydrogen-containing fraction using at least one heat exchanger to exchange heat with the mixture of step (b) and at least one turbo-expander capable of recovering mechanical work The process described may be used in for example Integrated Gasification Combined Cycles (IGCC) where the source of fuel is coal or low grade carbon sources such as lignite, tar sands and shale oil.

Le procédé ci-décrit permettant de séparer une charge de gaz de synthèse à l'eau corrosif en dioxyde de carbone liquide, gaz contenant de l'hydrogène gazeux et composants soufrés séparés comprend les étapes consistant à : a. laver le gaz à l'eau corrosif à pression élevée avec un solvant de type alcool dans un premier laveur et récupérer séparément un flux d'alcool contenant les composants soufrés et un gaz à l'eau non corrosif ; b. puis refroidir le gaz à l'eau non corrosif à une température et à une pression élevée auxquelles le dioxyde de carbone qu'il contient se condense et un mélange gaz-liquide biphasique se forme ; c. séparer le mélange biphasique de l'étape (b) en fractions distinctes de dioxyde de carbone liquide et fractions contenant de l'hydrogène gazeux dans une unité de fractionnement ; d. extraire le dioxyde de carbone résiduaire subsistant dans la fraction contenant de l'hydrogène gazeux par lavage de ladite fraction contenant de l'hydrogène gazeux avec un solvant de type alcool dans un second laveur et récupérer un flux d'alcool contenant le dioxyde de carbone ; e. charger le flux d'alcool contenant le dioxyde de carbone obtenu à l'étape (d) dans le premier laveur et f. réchauffer et détendre la fraction contenant de l'hydrogène gazeux lavée à l'aide d'au moins un échangeur thermique pour échanger la chaleur avec le mélange de l'étape (b) et d'au moins un détendeur à turbine capable de récupérer le travail mécanique. Le procédé ci-décrit peut être utilisé, par exemple, dans des cycles combinés de gazéification intégrés (IGCC) où la source de combustible est le charbon ou des sources de charbons de mauvaise qualité tels que le lignite, les sables asphaltiques et l'huile de schiste.
